Auroral Morphological Changes to the Formation of Auroral Spiral during the Late Substorm Recovery Phase: Polar UVI and Ground All‐Sky Camera Observations

چکیده
The ultraviolet imager (UVI) of the Polar spacecraft and an all-sky camera at Longyearbyen contemporaneously detected auroral vortex structure (so-called "auroral spiral") on 10 January 1997. From space, spiral was observed as a "small spot" (one azimuthally-aligned chain similar spots) in poleward region main oval from 18 h to 24 magnetic local time. These spots were formed while substorm-associated bulge subsiding several poleward-elongated streak-like structures appeared during late substorm recovery phase. During interval, geomagnetically north-south east-west components geomagnetic field, which ground stations around Svalbard island, showed significant negative positive bays caused by field-aligned currents related with aurora appearance. reflected variations activity index (SML) provided SuperMAG magnetometer network high latitudes. To pursue source magnetotail, we trace each UVI image along field lines equatorial plane nightside magnetosphere using empirical model. Interestingly, magnetotail corresponding covered broad Xgsm ~ -40 -70 RE Ygsm 8 12 RE. appearance this suggests that extensive areas (but regions ionosphere) remain active even when almost ceases, conditions are stable.

Automated determination of auroral breakup during the substorm expansion phase using allsky imager data
This paper describes a novel method for quantitatively and routinely identifying auroral breakup following substorm onset using the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms all-sky imagers. Substorm onset is characterized by a brightening of the aurora that is followed by auroral poleward expansion and auroral breakup. This breakup can be identified by a sharp increas...
متن کاملObservations of GPS scintillation during an isolated auroral substorm
This paper reports simultaneous observations of ionospheric scintillation during an auroral substorm that were made using an all-sky full-color digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera (ASC) and a Global Positioning System (GPS) ionospheric scintillation and total electron content monitor (GISTM) in Tromsø (69.60 N, 19.20 E), Norway. On the night of November 19, 2009, a small substorm occurred ...
متن کاملRelation of the auroral substorm to the substorm current wedge
The auroral substorm is an organized sequence of events seen in the aurora near midnight. It is a manifestation of the magnetospheric substorm which is a disturbance of the magnetosphere brought about by the solar wind transfer of magnetic flux from the dayside to the tail lobes and its return through the plasma sheet to the dayside. The most dramatic feature of the auroral substorm is the sudd...
متن کاملMagnetotail energy dissipation during an auroral substorm
Violent releases of space plasma energy from the Earth's magnetotail during substorms produce strong electric currents and bright aurora. But what modulates these currents and aurora and controls dissipation of the energy released in the ionosphere? Using data from the THEMIS fleet of satellites and ground-based imagers and magnetometers, we show that plasma energy dissipation is controlled by ...
متن کاملGround-based observations of the auroral zone and polar cap ionospheric responses to dayside transient reconnection
Observations from the EISCAT VHF incoherent scatter radar system in northern Norway, during a run of the common programme CP-4, reveal a series of polewardpropagating F-region electron density enhancements in the pre-noon sector on 23 November 1999. These plasma density features, which are observed under conditions of a strongly southward interplanetary magnetic field, exhibit a recurrence rate...
